Music +
Technology = Musicology…it won't be totally wrong if I
say that technology is changing music. But then, it
always has. Today, the technology is on such a speedy
stride that sooner or later anything happens in the West
creeps into India. With the advent of new technology,
not only the music scenario underwent a sea change but
also everyone's deft to understand music has completely
changed.
From cassette tapes, the industry moved to the Digital
sound recording systems since it is now affordable and
widely used. About every 20 years, a new technology
comes along and revolutionizes the sound of recorded
music. Music lovers are already shuffling play lists,
remixing tracks, sampling sounds, using recording
equipments like echo and reverb units, equalizers,
mixing boards and getting used to turntable where vinyl
records are played. Thousands of musicians around the
world are taking advantage of the cheap, powerful
technology and leisure served by both.

Now-a-days technology can add that extra spike to the
music, for which the ace singers, lyricist and even
music directors can't think of. It also allows the
musician to do multi-tracking; wherein musicians record
their parts side-by-side, and then mix all of them
together when they're done. What once was considered as
a team effort is now becoming more and more centralized.
The changes in technology have blurred the roles of
producer, engineer and musician. Music has become
shorter, more melodic and more precise. Computers have
made the process of recording, distribution and
production of music easy. Even live music performances

computer technology, ranging from sound
synthesizers, sequencers and samplers to
three-dimensional controllers for manipulating sound.Over the last few years, the growth of the Music
Industry has been crammed with innovation, exploitation,
and opportunities for
everyone with a musical bend of mind. Today's music is
composed keeping in minds the likes and dislikes of Gen
X. The lyrics have changed to suit changing trends.
Mixing, beat matching, scratching had eventually become
the area of interests. The setting of music is the
culmination of Trance, techno, retro, on the house,
disco, hip-hop, electric and Indi-Pop. Twentieth century's music is going through an
interesting phase right now; it's becoming trendy. Now
people want to listen to music that really relates to
the heartbeat quality, which gives a kind of
adrenaline-based excitement. Even in film industry, the
use of synthesizers and electronic drum machines has
considerably increased. Some examples include artistes
like Lucky Ali, The Colonial Cousins, Silk Route,
Euphoria, and Strings who made extensive use of modern
technology.
Indian Music Industry is also getting groovier tinsel
town's Bollywood. Bollywood music seems to have slanted
towards trendiest stuffs like narrative-style lyrics,
rocking beats and a cool-dude attitude - to get
Generation X's ear. Artist like Baba Sehgal, Apache
Indian, and Devang Patel made Rap Music familiar to the
Indian audience. Even actors seem to be dancing to their
own voice these days in movies. Hip-Hop trend has hit
the right note with the fans with films like Bluffmaster.
Unconventional lyrics, loud-peppy voice and classy
visual presentation are the order of the day.
Music technology has also had a far-reaching impact on
the music business due to the rapidly falling price of
professional recording equipment. While some fears that
this trend will spoil the artistic integrity of the
music, others feel that it will give well-deserved
exposure to millions of talents world-over. The future
of music is unknown. But whatever it is, it will be
swayed, as usual, by technology. |
