CYRUS BEING CYRUS

By Shruti Vijayan
A
nother addition to the several, recent well-done movies by a new and adventurous breed of Indian film-makers, Being Cyrus must be watched once, and must be watched closely. It promises you insight, a view, a disturbance. But first things first, let's agree that it has some really impressive performances, especially Naseeruddin, Dimple, Boman and of course Cyrus the man himself. ! Intense and riveting cinematography, taut dialogs, and an elating flavor of art bursting from the frames, make this movie what its worth. The characters have been crafted well, and performances are to match.Naseeruddin

takes the cake, however, as the artistic dope, who lives in his own world of images and beauty. The movie takes you to a certain height with an easy flourish.

First the setup. The story revolves around the families of two brothers and their old father. Two families, one living in Panchgani, and the other in Mumbai. The dope smoking Dinshaw (Naseeruddin Shah) is a talented sculptor who lives with his wife Katty (Dimple Kapadia). Dinshaw's younger brother Farokh (Boman Irani) is a high-handed and mean-minded man who lives with his wife Tina (Simone Singh) and his father Fardoonjee (Honey Chhaya), a pitiable old man who evokes much sympathy for being the father ignored and not cared for by his sons, especially Farokh.

Dinshaw opens his house to a stranger called Cyrus, supposed to assist him at his school. It initiates a new chapter in the Sethna family story.

One must speak of the mounting of the film - of the Production Design, the creation of the Parsee Ambiance, Anaita Shroff Adajania's costumes and Jehangir Chowdhury's wonderful cinematography. Several Sequences in the film are extremely well handled and stand out - the sequence at the well where Dinshaw cuts his foot, the Policeman's reaction to the cream in his tea or the interrogation scene of Dinshaw and Katy among others. Even the light work leaves a different kind of impression on audience mind. In many sequences high key lights were used, to increase the contrast. The film makes very solid use of the voice over technique in true noir fashion and the voice over too is imaginative, witty and well written.

The Story takes time to build up and does go exploring more on the character's background. The Screenplay is superb with witty dialogs and a clear state narration from Saif Ali Khan. He does a terrific job on being the character of a Cyrus, a dark and mysterious man who lurks in the crowds of Mumbai. The whole turn of events helps in making you feel for the characters.

The other details are also well used especially the Photography, it gives the dark feeling environment around us. The Edit is very fast too, making the movie run for about 100 min and giving it the feel of a Hitchcock episode. The sounds and music are also well used and tune in well for the movie.

The Movie looks like it was made from inspirations such as Alfred Hitchcock and the Twilight Zone series. The Screenplay is very original and also well directed. Purely good performances and everything goes in a simple manner. All in all the movie is worth the visit and keeps on going well till the final twist, which is a must see for any type of movie
