Budget 2006
Budget 2006 was along the lines of the previous budgets as far as the Indian media industry is concerned. One of the proposals of budget 2006 was the inclusion of "sale of ad space or time, other than print media, for advertisements" under service tax. Further, service tax is also being hiked from 10% to 12%.

The Times of India group has launched its supplement, Education Times, as a free add-on with The Economic Times in Chennai, from April 1. The fortnightly follows the launch of Auto Mania. Soon to follow is ET Realty, which will also be a fortnightly circulated with The Economic Times.



O&M makes a clean sweep of the Ad Club Bombay's 39th Abby Awards were held in Mumbai on March 31. The awards were mostly along expected lines with O&M being awarded the 'Agency of the Year' for the seventh consecutive year.



Omega makes shift in ad strategy The Swiss watch maker has decided to make a vital shift in its advertising by experimenting with brand ambassadors that are not famous faces but pack in a message, an experiment slated to kick off in India in three to four weeks.

Bhaskar Group celebrates 2.25 crore readership mark. The National Readership Survey (NRS 2005) had given the Bhaskar group a total readership figure of 2.25 crore for its publications Dainik Bhaskar and Divya Bhaskar.



TV18 has picked up 50 per cent stake in Malaysia-headquartered recruitment website JobStreet.com. Formed in 1995, JobStreet.com's operations extend across Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and India, where it has offices in Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai.



Vijay Chacko, former VP-South, Clea PR, started his own shop, Brand Wave Communications, in January 2006. Since then, the agency has managed to line up an impressive tally of clients in its first three months, including TVS Motor Company



STAR, Hindustan Times roped in as principal sponsors of AAAI's GoaFest. Red FM and Xerox have come in as associate partners. In addition, exchange4media, Indya.com, Star 7827 and Showtime Events are the official promotional partners. The festival will be held on April 29-30.



Zee Telefilms Ltd (ZTL) has agreed, in-principle, to acquire 60 per cent stake in Venus Films Pvt Ltd and Venus Records & Tapes Pvt Ltd. Venus Records & Tapes has a repertoire of 2,500 titles. Venus Films has rights to the negatives of 30 blockbuster films like 'Baazigar', 'Yes Boss' and 'Akele Hum Akele Tum', among others.



Sahara One in expansion mode; to launch Hindi music channel. Along with Sahara One Television and Filmy, the music channel will complete the genres of mass Hindi entertainment from Sahara One



International: Coke unveils new ad theme - 'Happiness in a bottle'. While TV is a major aspect of the global effort, themed "The Coke side of life," digital, viral and consumer-created content will dominate the continuous feed of creative during the year.



Gujarati Mid Day donned a new look from April 3, making the paper much more trendy and smaller in size as it shed its broadsheet format to fit into a new compact tabloid size.



Its play ball for English movies channels as PIX debuted 1st April and entered the choice game - for both viewer and advertiser. The channel was launched pan India on April 1, 2006 with three core franchises and a festival planned.



Private equity investor Warburg Pincus picked up a 7 per cent stake in the Hindi publication, Dainik Bhaskar for Rs 150 crore, putting the valuation of the company at Rs.2143 cr.



STAR News completed three years in the Hindi News television industry on March 31. To mark the occasion, the channel has planned to launch a new service for it's viewers - eliciting viewer interactivity. This service aims at reiterating STAR News' positioning of 'People's Channel'.



ESPN garners highest channel share during most sensational ODI ever - the South Africa vs. Australia aired on ESPN on March 12, 2006 - saw eight records tumble and needless to say one of the highest TVR for a non-India cricket match.



The 3rd annual Music Awards that ETC Punjabi had initiated on March 18, 2006 has delivered for the channel. In terms of channel share, ETC Punjabi has beaten general entertainment channel Sony when it aired Pond's Femina Miss India, effectively taking a lead over Sony on that day in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh

P9 Integrated eyes 50 pc share of brand entertainment space market by the end of 2006. NDTV, Genpact announce Media, Broadcasting and Entertainment alliance to offer cost-effective, high quality media services to global and regional media and entertainment companies in areas like editing, digitization and closed captioning.



BCCI floated a tender for global media rights for matches played in neutral territory outside India This included media rights for the upcoming Indo-Pak Friendship Series in Abu Dhabi. The global media rights tender comprises all television, radio and Internet rights. The tender is for a period of five years from April 1, 2006 to March 31, 2011.



FMCG adspend soars despite slowing sales HLL passed a key milestone in '05 when its advertising expenses crossed Rs 1,000-crore. But what is more remarkable is that HLL's adspend grew 20% in a year when sales grew by just 11%. And not only HLL, but other FMCG companies have also upped advertising in a big way to sustain the recovery seen in sales growth.

Rediffusion DYR, Delhi wins creative duties for New Balance shoes The size of the business is Rs 3 crore. New Balance shoes are a leading running and walking shoes brand based in Boston. The shoes brand are launching in the first week of May in India.



A study on print innovations in magazines in 2005: AdEx analysis. The most used innovation in print advertising in magazines last year was 'free product with sample'. As a category, public issue advertising witnessed the maximum number of innovations. The brand with the maximum number of innovative ads was Cyber Media.



Nimbus close to buying a TV channel in partnership with a foreign broadcasting major. It has already acquired four-year global media rights for telecasting Indian cricket for a whopping Rs 2,700 crore.



International: Marketers lose confidence in TV advertising, 78% Say Effectiveness Is Diminishing; Clutter, DVRs to Blame. Advertisers said they have less confidence today in the effectiveness of TV advertising than they did two years ago, according to a survey released at Association of National Advertisers TV Ad Forum. 80% will spend more of their advertising budgets on Web advertising and 68% are looking into search engine marketing.
